On Monday my husband Luke and I decided to head over to Kauai Beer Company to celebrate his book launch. It is a great local restaurant that is within walking distance from where we live. We traveled by foot on Rice Street to the beer company. It was nice, getting a little bit cooler, as it was in the early evening when we got there. We already had a plan in mind and that was to do some beer tasting. I feel good about the experience. We learned a lot about comparing and contrasting brews, all the while on the hunt for the perfect flavor. It only seemed logical that we order a flight to get a well-rounded experience. Here are the eight glasses of beer that we sampled:
Jerry’s Rice Beer
Mellow and light, Jerry’s Rice Beer is a quality drink that I would recommend to anyone that enjoys beer in general. Also, specifically, I recommend this rice lager for people who are looking to take the edge off gradually and in a relaxed fashion.
Taking a look at alcohol content Jerry’s Rice Beer weighs in at 4.5% ABV (Alcohol By Volume) and 11.1 IBU (International Bitterness Units).
Kauai Beer Company describes it as, “Brewed with locally-grown rice from Jerry’s Farm, very light-bodied with a clean hop aroma.”
Give it a chance and enjoy the smooth taste of this rice brew.
Lihue Lager
Apple cider comes to mind when I tasted Lihue Lager. The apple flavor however does not kick in until you’ve already sipped, it’s a pleasant light after-taste. This Munich-style Helles will not disappoint you.
This gem has an ABV of 4.5% and an IBU of 17.4.
The establishment says it’s a “Malty German-style pale lager, a blend of traditional and tropical flavored hops.”
For those who like those fruity flavors this lager is a winner.
Black Limousine
First of all, lets check out the description for Black Limousine: “German-style schwarzbier” that is “A surprisingly refreshing dark lager, with caramel and toffee notes.” Schwarzbier. Say that five times fast and get back to me.
Simply put I do believe that this brew is the German version of Guiness. It’s bold, but not too strong, and I do resonate with those caramel and toffee notes. Great flavor.
This schwarzbier weighs in at 5.0 ABV and an IBU of 22.4.
Black Limousine is what it sounds like, refreshing and flavorful, and something best enjoyed while traveling in a limousine taking in the tropical landscapes surrounding you.
Oktoberfest
Hearty and full-bodied this Marzen lager will not disappoint. In fact it may even inspire you. Don’t pass up your chance to try this beer.
Kauai Beer Company shares, “Our take on the traditional German fest beer, intensely malty with a noble hop finish.”
ABV is 6.9% while the IBU is at 22.
Great way to celebrate the fall and winter months, and take part in the Oktoberfest tradition and drink to your heart’s content.
Hazy IPA
This fruit cocktail of a drink means business and it comes as no surprise that this is part of the top picks out of the lineup. KBC says of Hazy IPA “Juicy, with tropical fruit and citrus notes. Hopped with Citra, Mosaic, and Nectaron.”
Hazy IPA’s ABV is 6.8% while its IBU is 16.2.
I’d also like to add that this brew has refreshing earthy notes to it too. Get down to earth and have a Hazy IPA. You won’t regret it.
Beer Co IPA
In short this American IPA will put hair on your chest. There’s no way around the intensity of Beer Co IPA, and I think in this sense it really delivers.
Enjoy the beer company’s signature beer’s “Slight caramel malitness with Nelson and Cascade CRYO hops.”
It’s no surprise that this drink is near the top of the list in terms of ABV at 7.3%. IBU is 72.2.
Bitter and dense, yet satisfying, Beer Co IPA does the job. ‘Nuff said.
Kokobopo
Unique flavors abound when consuming Kokobopo. If you want something different that’s dense and hearty, give this beer a try. The beer company tells it like it is, “Robust porter infused with bourbon-soaked, medium oak chips.”
There’s nothing surprising about the stats: 6.8% ABV “Oak aged porter,” with an IBU of 25.3. The IBU alone speaks volumes about the flavor.
Sleeping Giant
Sleeping Giant is a perfect name for this American barleywine. Just like when you’re at a concert and you’re waiting for the headliner and they finally arrive, well that’s what it was like when finally getting to taste the last but certainly not least in the lineup, Sleeping Giant.
Kauai Beer Company describes this barleywine as “Our annual barleywine. Intensely malty with lots of hops to balance.”
It is safe to say that this beer is like liquid gold and boy does Sleeping Giant look good on paper with an ABV of 9.3% and an IBU with 70.2. Now that you know the facts, don't be surprised if you go to sleep after consuming this beer.
Bold and fruity at the same time, this absolutely was my favorite beer and you really should not miss the opportunity to try it.
